What If Your Child's First Steps Toward Learning Started Right Here?
At Lumberton Head Start Center, we partner with families to give young children the strong foundation they need — through early education, health screenings, and the support every child deserves before they ever walk into a classroom.
Comprehensive Services for Every Child's Growth
Head Start goes beyond early education. We address the whole child — and the whole family — through integrated services that remove barriers to learning and build lasting strength.
Early Childhood Education
Research-based curriculum designed to prepare preschoolers for kindergarten and beyond. Our trained educators foster cognitive, language, and social-emotional development through play-based learning in a nurturing classroom environment.
Health & Medical Screenings
Every child receives regular health, dental, and developmental screenings. We connect families with ongoing medical and dental care, ensuring no child learns while struggling with an untreated health need.
Family & Parent Support
Parents are a child's first teacher — and our partners. We offer family goal-setting, parent engagement activities, referrals to community resources, and support to help families achieve stability and self-sufficiency.
Nutrition & Meal Services
We provide nutritious breakfast and lunch every day, meeting the dietary needs of growing children. Our nutrition education also extends to families, promoting healthy eating habits at home.
Inclusion for Children with Disabilities
Every child belongs. Our inclusive classrooms welcome children of all abilities, with individualized support, adaptive materials, and collaboration with families and specialists to ensure full participation.
Mental Health & Social-Emotional Support
Our mental health consultants work directly with children and families, providing screening, consultation, and referrals. We help children build the emotional skills they need to thrive in school and in life.
A Program for Every Stage of Early Childhood
From infants through preschool age, Lumberton Head Start offers age-appropriate programs that meet children exactly where they are — and help them take the next step.
Early Head Start — Infants & Toddlers
For children from birth to age 3, our Early Head Start program focuses on brain development, secure attachments, and supporting parents in their critical role as first educators during the fastest years of growth.
Head Start — Preschool
For children ages 3 to 5, our full-day preschool program builds school readiness through structured learning, social interaction, health services, and family engagement — all in a warm, stimulating classroom setting.
Head Start on the Go
For families who need flexibility, our mobile outreach program brings Head Start services directly to communities across Lumberton and surrounding areas, ensuring no family is too far to access support.
A Trusted Partner in Lumberton's Future
Lumberton Head Start Center has been a cornerstone of early childhood services in Robeson County since 1965. What began as a small community initiative has grown into a comprehensive program serving hundreds of families each year — but our mission has never changed.
We believe that every child, regardless of their family's income or circumstances, deserves a strong start. Our approach is rooted in the belief that children learn best when their health, emotional well-being, and family environment are supported alongside their education.
